StellarCare NW Partners with the University of Liverpool
At StellarCare NW, we have always believed that the heart of outstanding care lies in the well-being of our team. Because even though social care is an incredibly rewarding vocation, it’s actually also one that demands deep emotional resilience. Especially when supporting individuals living with dementia and complex clinical needs.
That is why we are incredibly proud to announce that StellarCare NW has been selected as a pioneer testbed site for a groundbreaking research project exploring staff wellbeing, in collaboration with the University of Liverpool.
This funded study explores the value of implementing Schwartz Rounds within domiciliary and home care services. While this evidence-based framework is well-established within NHS hospital settings, this project represents one of the very first times it is being trialled and evaluated within independent social care and home care environments.
What are Schwartz Rounds?
Developed by the Schwartz Centre for Compassionate Healthcare, Schwartz Rounds provide a structured, safe forum for clinical and non-clinical staff to come together regularly.
Unlike standard clinical handovers or training sessions, the Schwartz Rounds do not focus on problem-solving or medical tasks. Instead, they offer a dedicated space for staff to openly reflect on the emotional and social aspects of caring for people.
Why This Matters for Dementia and Home Care
Providing 1-on-1 support in a client’s home requires immense empathy. For carers navigating the unique, changing rhythms of dementia, the emotional toll can be significant.
And as a nurse-led team committed to innovation, we recognise that we cannot expect our staff to pour from an empty cup. By introducing reflective practice through Schwartz Rounds, we’re establishing a vital psychological safety net for our team.
Supporting the mental and emotional health of our care staff is fundamental to ensuring they can continue delivering the highest quality, most compassionate care to our clients across Cheshire and the North West. As mentioned by our Managing Director, Stella Shaw:
“When we talk about dementia care, we often focus entirely on the clients, and we forget the incredible emotional energy it takes from the person providing that care. At StellarCare NW, our team gives so much of themselves every single day. And for me, partnering with the University of Liverpool isn’t just about data. It’s about looking our staff in the eye and saying, ‘We see you, we know this work is heavy sometimes, and we are here to support you too.’ Because if we don’t look after the hearts of our carers, we simply cannot provide the level of love and care our clients deserve.”
Behind the Scenes: A Fantastic Launch Day
To officially kick off our participation in the research project, we were delighted to welcome Leah Shinn (MPsycholSci), Research Assistant, and Clarissa Giebel, Senior Research Fellow, from the University of Liverpool, to our offices. Leah provided our team with an insightful introduction to the project, outlining what our participation will involve. She also kindly brought a wonderful selection of cakes that created a relaxed, welcoming, and collaborative atmosphere for everyone involved.
To add to the significance of the day, we were also joined virtually via Microsoft Teams by Professor Mark Gabbay from the University of Liverpool. Professor Gabbay shared his expert insights into the extensive evidence behind Schwartz Rounds and discussed the profound, long-term impact this research could have on the future of the wider social care sector.
Supported by a catered lunch provided for the staff, we are pleased to say the launch session generated incredible engagement, thoughtful discussions, and immense enthusiasm across the entire StellarCare NW team.
“We had a lovely day with Leah and Mark, and yes, the cakes definitely helped break the ice!” Stella laughed. “But jokes aside, seeing how quickly our staff opened up and embraced this idea showed me exactly why these sessions are so desperately needed in social care. We aren’t just doing this for a research paper. We’re doing it to make everyday working life better for our carers. I can’t wait to see the positive impact this is going to have on our team and, ultimately, our clients.”
Looking Ahead: Leading the Sector by Example
Our staff have wholeheartedly welcomed the opportunity to contribute to a project that actively recognises the emotional realities of care work.
And StellarCare NW is deeply honoured to stand alongside the University of Liverpool at the forefront of this pioneering research. We look forward to sharing our findings and helping to shape a brighter, more supportive future for reflective practice across the entire UK social care sector.
